As part of its on-going study to ascertain exploitation rates by rod and line, as well as to discover more about the movements of fish in the River, The Tweed Foundation commenced its annual tagging programme last week. These Salmon are all being released, unharmed, from the commercial in-river nets up until the end of June by agreement between the netsmen and the River Tweed Commission

To date, 14 Salmon have been tagged with external YELLOW tags in the Tweed estuary, with seven of those having internal acoustic tags in them as well.

The Spring Salmon being tagged presently will all have YELLOW tags.  After the end of June, all the tags will be BLUE in colour.

The Tweed Foundation will be undertaking some in-river netting again this summer to help with its exploitation study.

Netting will take place on all the dates below given the right water conditions

2010 Summer Netting dates for scientific research at  Paxton netting station.

Saturday, 12th June at 12.45 Hrs
Saturday,26th June at 12.45 Hrs

Saturday, 10th July at 12.00 Hrs
Saturday, 24th July at 12.30 Hrs

Saturday, 14th August at 16.00 Hrs

Water conditions play a large part in this exercise, and so to ensure that you will not be disappointed it is vital to check that the water height is suitable for the netting to take place.  The key to netting at Paxton is the river height at the Norham gauging station:

If the river level at the Norham station is 1' 6" or less, then the netting will take place.

The River Levels can be found on the FishTweed website

or on the Tweedline River Information Service, Telephone 09060 400411

(Calls to this service are charged at £1.50 per minute from a BT landline and other network and mobile costs may vary. Profits from your call will go to The Tweed Foundation to help preserve fish stocks. The service is provided by The Tweed Foundation, Drygrange Steading, Melrose, TD6 9DJ and any difficulties with this service should be reported to +44 (0)1896 848271.)
