Dr Ronald Campbell, The Tweed Foundation's senior Biologist, has clocked up 20 years working at the cutting edge of fisheries management on Tweed today.
No, he didn't pinch it! The sign is ours!!
Dr Campbell said, "In some ways it feels like no time at all; it's been a
lot of fun."
Ronald is the first Biologist who was employed on Tweed and when he started,
back in 1990, working conditions were somewhat different: he was the sole
member of staff, development of the Drygrange offices had not even started, and
he worked - for the main part - from a small desk in the corner of his own
sitting room. Foundation vehicles were a lot less reliable and there was
even more ‘make do and mend’ than at present (and we’re pretty good at that
now, too!)
Ronald and The Tweed Foundation have come a long way since those early days -
and both are still at the forefront of freshwater fisheries management,
tackling all matters "fish", ranging from exploitation tagging
to electro-fishing; biodiversity to beavers; fish traps to Foundation show
stands (and a lot of heavy fisheries' science issues to boot). Ronald has never
swerved from meeting difficult issues head-on.
