The weather was kind on the Border Union Show days this year, following some very heavy downpours over the preceding and subsequent weeks.  Two dry days ensued, with Saturday in particular bringing in the crowds.

The combined Tweed Foundation, River Tweed Commission and TweedStart tent was well attended, with the TweedStart casting pond proving very busy and a great attraction for young and old alike.

The casting pond provided everyone with a chance to try their hand at fly fishing

From L to R: Kenny Galt, Tweed Foundation Trout and Grayling Biologist, and William Rodger (background), TweedStart's
Chairman, and Tommy Heard (foreground), RTC Water Bailiff, provide three young chaps with their first taste of handling a fly fishing rod

Inside our tent, displays illustrated the various strands of work undertaken by the Tweed Foundation, including the popular children's quiz.

Participants in the quiz try and identify some of the freshwater invertebrates found in Tweed's rivers and burns

Terry Brown demonstrates some fly tying skills and children were invited to try and tie their own fly

Badge making, following completion of the quiz, was popular
Children chose their favourite Tweed fish species or invertebrate picture to make into a badge

The "Guess The Weight" competition this year was a little different:
people were asked to guess the combined original live weight of a Salmon and a Brown Trout,
with casts of the two fish (beautifully made and loaned by Ronnie Glass) on display.

The answer was 29lbs, 6oz.
The Salmon weighing in at 22lbs, 3oz and the Brown Trout at 7lbs, 3oz.

The competition ran both days with a winner on each, who coincidentally both guessed 29lbs, 3oz.
Mr Guy Lee won on the Friday and Mrs Liz Hall on the Saturday.
Both won a side of smoked wild Tweed Salmon.
