Anglers and boatmen are currently reporting that very few fish are being caught on the River this Spring. The current estimate is that the Spring catch to date is only half what we have had in recent years. There does not seem to be any particular reason for this and some other rivers are experiencing similar low catches, this despite near ideal water conditions. Clearly everyone is concerned about this.  There is nothing that either the River Tweed Commission (RTC) or The Tweed Foundation can do about the lack of fish this year, and indeed there may be nothing untoward. However we should at least apply the precautionary principle and do what we can to protect future runs.

It is therefore especially important this season that all Tweed beats apply the
RTC’s Spring Salmon Conservation Measures, with so few fish running.

The RTC is also requesting that anglers please err on the safe side and return more, or preferably ALL fish, rather than fewer.

Usually, if the Spring Conservation Measures are applied we should be returning at least two-thirds of the catch; this year we should aim for more than this.

Thank you for your cooperation.
