Electro-fishing

Every summer Tweed Foundation staff visit monitoring sites belonging to different sub-catchments of the Tweed and Eye basins.  It is an essential part of our research that enables us to keep a close eye of how many juvenile salmon and trout there are in the river. We are very keen to encourage members, and anyone else who is interested, to join us to see what electric-fishing entails. Quite often the landowners of the sites will come along to see what we can find in their section of burns. Previous guests who have come out for the day are often surprised by the numbers of fish contained in sections of water that would appear to contain very little. Most sites we visit have high densities of either species, along with the presence of other species existing in the Tweed and Eye catchments such as lamprey, grayling or eel.

This summer, as part of its regular cyclical monitoring programme, the Foundation will be electro-fishing on the River Whiteadder and the Eye Water, with some additional locations yet to be finalised.

If you would like to come out on any of these days with us, then please contact the Foundation's Assistant Biologist, James Hunt (who runs the programme) and a meeting point and date can be arranged.  A typical day normally starts at 9am and finishes around 4pm.

Exploitation Netting

The Foundation undertakes some netting each season to help with its exploitation study.  To do this we make use of a commercial netting station in the Tweed estuary and also the netting station at Paxton House, which is run as a part commercial/part tourist attraction on the Estate. Fish caught for the Foundation by this traditional net and coble netting method are measured, tagged and returned to the water.  Future recaptures by anglers, reported to the Foundation, help us build on our knowledge of the exploitation rate of our stocks, and fish behaviour.

This year we will be netting at Paxton on two Saturdays during the summer and would therefore like to encourage members to come along and see the netting in action.  The Tweed Foundation will be netting at Paxton on:

Saturday, 19th July at 2.30pm

and

Saturday, 16th August at 1.30pm

Please note:  normal admission charges to Paxton House and Grounds will be applicable
