The Tweed is a European Special Area of Conservation (SAC) for all three species of Lamprey found in Britain, so The Tweed Foundation collects and records information on them. This is the time of year when the smallest of the three species, the Brook Lamprey, spawns. Its sites are very obvious, in shallow water close to the edge with the animals very active and unafraid – as can be seen in these pictures.

Sightings of spawning sites - recent or current -should please be reported to The Tweed Foundation biological team.  Email: info@tweedfoundation.org.uk   Tel: 01896 848271

The larger species, the River and Sea Lamprey will be spawning soon, but in deeper water. River Lampreys are 40-50cms in length, the Sea Lamprey around 1 metre. Please report any sightings of these as well.
