Following a few weeks of low water temperatures and only a few fish passing through the fish counters, the mild weather last Friday saw a large run of fish up the Gala Water. Water temperature increased from a steady 5c to 9c in one day. Even without a rise in water, over 250 fish (mostly Salmon) were recorded through the Gala fish counter in one day. The photo below shows a 92 cm male Salmon caught at the fish trap currently run at the Gala fish counter, that is helping The Tweed Foundation to check the lengths of fish calculated by the fish counter.
Following recording, James Hunt releases a large male Salmon from the Gala fish trap
Monthly counts from both the Foundation's fish counters - on the Ettrick and the Gala - can be found on this website. Further general information on the fish counters can be accessed on The Tweed Foundation website
