Monday 10th September : Down from Pitlochry in the morning, with the repaired electric-fishing machine, a quick lunch and then out with Steven electric-fishing on the middle and lower Yarrow. Some very good results, much better than some past years.
Tuesday 11th September : A Trustees' meeting in the morning, followed by the Foundation's AGM, with a small, but select, audience. Kenny and James out on fieldwork, so I gave their reports as well as my own. Another case for CSI Melrose afterwards - fish found in a car - from the river or from the sea ? A catch-up meeting with Nick, the Director in the afternoon. As always at this time of year, the amount of fieldwork means that admin and other work gets left behind.
Wednesday 12th September : Out electric-fishing the Yarrow, with Steven. The best ever results from the Little Yarrow, which comes into the Loch of the Lowes. We have suspicions about the access from the Yarrow into St. Mary's and the Little Yarrow sites can, in some years, have almost no Salmon fry in them at all. Very different this year -right at the top, at Kerrcleuch, almost on the watershed, we got 44 Salmon fry in the five minute sample, a top rank result.
Thursday 13th September : Weekly staff meeting this morning, as Nick on holiday tomorrow. Out in the afternoon to electric-fish more sites on the Ettrick. Good results again. Had thought would have to repeat some sites from last week this afternoon as well, as it appeared that James had lost his results, but when persuaded to do a final search of his paper-cluttered desk, they turned up, to great relief all round. He has promised to buy me a drink to compensate for the stress caused to me by this, though as James buying a round is not one of the commoner natural phenomena of the Borders, I will not hold my breathe in anticipation.
Friday 14th September : Finished the annual Ettrick & Yarrow fry survey with the topmost section of the Ettrick. Very good numbers of Fry even here. The river very low though.
