The Gala fish counter's camera catches the tail end of the first Salmon passing upstream.
It is not known whether this fish is a fresh Summer Grilse / Salmon or a Spring Salmon that has been in the river for a while. The fact that this is the first Salmon of the year on the Gala Water provides further evidence that this tributary produces mainly Summer / Autumn fish rather than Spring fish. On the Ettrick Water, from where most Tweed Spring Salmon originate, Salmon pass through the fish counter as early as February. With the abundant rainfall this Summer making ideal running conditions for fish, 11 other fish have also been counted through the Gala counter but with the poor water visibility they could not be species-identified using the video camera although most, if not all, were probably Sea-trout.
