Monday 25th June : Admin in the morning, replanning the weeks work after so much rain. Supposed to be getting a phone call from a BBC researcher, but didn't. In the afternoon down to the estuary with the trap - all the equipment there now, just need the weather. About 3' extra of water in the estuary, so no chance for a day or two of actually trying it out. The Ettrick counter finally turned up after its repairs in Iceland & Sean manages to put it back together.
Tuesday 26th June : Office in the morning, Steven getting on with making a hood for the aquarium in the visitor centre, so its lighting can be improved. Sean going to Philiphaugh to try and connect the counter and its computer up on land - if he succeeds the water might be low enough to get it back in tomorrow - the water in the fish ladder has to be cut off to be able to install it. Go up to Peebles & Tweedsmuir with Steven to download the temperature data-loggers at the traps and clean them up after the spates. Want to make some minor improvements at the Tweedsmuir trap, so have a thinking session & come up with some ideas. Back at the office find that Sean has managed to connect up the counter on dry land, so if the water is low enough, can try and get it back in tomorrow.
Wednesday 27th June : Management Manual work in the morning, then out with Sean and Steven to the Ettrick fish pass to try and re-install the counter. Got it back in, but couldn't get it working again. Seems to be a software problem. Phoned James at his holiday retreat but he wasn't able to come up with an answer. Left it with the video pictures going through to the Philiphaugh Viewing Centre at least.
Thursday 28th June : All day at the estuary, trying out the trap. Had to start earlier than had planned, with the tide further out because of all the spate water coming down. Got it all assembled to plan, then had to wait all day - some useful advice from visiting netsmen. Nothing in the end, but will have to try various sites to see where is best. Read through the draft Strategic Framework for Scottish Freshwater Fisheries while waiting - rather disappointing, and factually incorrect on several points, which was very surprising.
Friday 29th June : At the Freshwater Fisheries Laboratory, Faskally all day, at a meeting on electric-fishing surveys.
