Signal Crayfish trapping on the Till has finished for the year. With the constant high water and lower temperatures, the Signal Crayfish traps have now been removed. At present, the Tweed Foundation knows that they exist on the Till from Redscar Bridge down to Ford Village, but until trapping can recommence in the springtime, their true distribution on the Till won't be known. The year's count now stands at 25.
In the New Year the Foundation plans to work with the Environment Agency to prevent illegal trapping and movement of Signal Crayfish from the Till population, which could increase their rate of spread. Any research is also being encouraged, probably through a University, on the effect of Signal Crayfish on local fish populations and local biodiversity in general. JH
